Your Camino begins at 4:00 PM local time at Bilbao Airport. We'll meet you at the Arrivals Gate and whisk you away in our private coach-bus to the Sanctuary of Loyola Retreat House. Nestled in a lush valley, this peaceful space fosters an environment of relaxation, which is essential to a deeply lived encounter with the Divine. You'll have time to settle in before the Welcome Orientation. Let's start our Camino with excitement and a shared sense of purpose!
Embrace the serenity of the Hermitage of Our Lady of Olatz and listen for the whispers of your own heart in the peaceful environment. We start to delve into 'The Spiritual Exercises' here, exploring key questions that guide our inner conversations with the spiritual world. Next, you’ll visit the historical Basilica of Loyola and the room where St Ignatius was born. This evening we will gather for an intimate candlelit ceremony in our own private chapel to set intentions.
Immerse yourself in reflection as you walk beside the peaceful river to the Mary Magdalene Hermitage. This is a time to consider what changes you yearn for in your life and listen to your heart's deepest callings. The hermitage serves not only as a historical site but also as a sanctuary of solace, where St. Ignatius once served those in need. Pause and find tranquility by the brook adjacent to the hermitage, just as pilgrims have done for centuries.
After the morning 'Spiritual Exercises' workshop, we'll follow the old railway track which has been converted into a walking route that winds through a lush forest. Here in the company of ancient trees, stretch out of your familiar surroundings with a technique of Ignatian reflection that detects Spirit’s presence in our lives. Next, we'll admire the mystical 14th-century La Antigua Church, where its stunning wooden beamed ceiling will leave you in awe of its gothic beauty.
Ascend Aizkorri Mountain and watch the landscape transform from verdant slopes to rugged limestone, leading us to an impressive water reservoir. Sip from the mountain spring and notice that the magnificent trees rise to the sky like columns of an immense cathedral. The trail steepens as we approach the summit, the lush forest gives way to open grasslands, wild horses, and the air fills with the melodic clang of sheep bells. We reach our destination and enjoy a well-deserved rest in a highland sacred retreat.
Wake up in the spiritual oasis of Sanctuary Arantzazu, where legend says the Virgin Mary once appeared before a shepherd. The unusual avant- garde church has a prayerful power that emanates from the center. You'll experience a blend of meditation and movement; as we walk, we’ll practice the Ignatian technique of discerning our inner spiritual compass. Let this day be about making decisions that align with your truest self. This evening's destination is a castle that has been transformed into a luxurious hotel, where old-world charm meets modern comfort.
The famous Rioja Alavesa Wine Country captivates the senses! Marvel at the vineyard-covered hillsides and allow the rhythms of nature to deepen your introspection. The town of Laguardia, encircled by medieval walls and gates, welcomes you with its old-world charm. We'll experience a wine tasting and connect the joy of the harvest with the spiritual joy of life's journey. Conclude the day with a walk atop the village walls, soaking in panoramic views as the sun casts a warm glow over the distant mountains.
Brace yourself for the vibrant essence of Zaragoza, a gem among Spanish cities, adorned with a mosaic of cultural influences and grand historical monuments. The magnificent Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar is where Mother Mary appeared to St. James, leaving an iconic jasper pillar as evidence of her visit. Venture into the heart of the old town, where each turn among the cobbled streets reveals stunning murals that tell the storied past of this enchanting city. Finally, indulge in local tapas and try their gourmet specialties!
Fields of olive trees and red poppies welcome us to Catalonia's scenic wine country. The smell of lavender fills the air as we wander into the quaint hometown of Saint Peter Claver. This heroic Jesuit went below the decks of African slave ships to care for the frightened slaves who endured the exhausting journey to America. How can you draw inspiration from his example? We are challenged to confront our personal struggles, but we find comfort knowing that countless pilgrims have walked this path before us.
Excitement builds as we approach one of the highlights of our pilgrimage. Silhouettes of the Montserrat mountains emerge before us and we watch them rise as we hike toward our goal. Keep an eye out for wildlife, such as mountain goats and majestic birds. Today, the Spiritual Exercises are about forgiveness and freedom. Let yourself experience the fact that you are deeply loved. There is nothing you can do to remove this love because it’s unconditional.
The sunrise spills into your window atop the mountain. You draw back the curtain to witness a spectacular display of glowing oranges melting into ruby reds. Listen to the echo of the church bells and join the monks for morning chants in “the monastery above the clouds.” Discover the treasures of Montserrat, nicknamed “the mystical mountain” because it is the home of the revered Black Madonna statue. Climb the stairway adorned with intricate mosaics of female saints and find yourself in the silver-plated room of the mysterious Black Madonna.
Descend from the spiritual heights of Montserrat to the historic town of Manresa. Treading along a path filled with natural beauty, we trace the steps of pilgrims past. Scenes of the countryside unfold with each step on this ancient Roman Road, leading us beside the calm waters of the river. As we walk, we meditate on the insights gained, pledging to carry them into our daily lives. The day's trek concludes with the breathtaking sight atop a cliff, offering a sweeping view of the valley.
Indulge in the tranquility of La Garriga de Castelladral, a world-class eco-retreat where history meets serenity. Our final Spiritual Exercises workshop will help you reflect on your journey, allowing for deeper understanding and growth. You have free time in the afternoon to enjoy an immersive forest bathing meditation, designed to revitalize your senses. Enjoy the company of new lifelong friends in our luxurious countryside villa. We will share a fantastic meal together and celebrate our Camino!
Follow the path of Ignatius in the historic city of Manresa, beginning with the Chapel of The Rapture, a site of deep mysticism where Ignatius once had ecstatic visions. Descend into the very cave where Ignatius wrote the Spiritual Exercises. Deep inside the cave, you can almost feel the heartbeat of the Earth. Finally, we’ll visit the Pilgrim Office where you will receive your 'Certificate of Accomplishment'. Our pilgrimage ends with an overnight stay near Barcelona Airport, for your convenience.
